Animals Found in Critical Condition
The group included one male lion, one female lion, two Asiatic black bears, and one sun bear, all of which were found in extremely weak and emaciated condition. Wildlife experts reported that the animals were likely deprived of food and water for an extended period, with ribs visibly protruding from their bodies.
Officials from Thailand’s Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP) were called to the scene and worked alongside military personnel to assess the animals’ health. Because the animals were so frail, veterinarians chose not to sedate them due to the high risk of heart failure, instead offering vitamins, fluids, and careful monitoring before relocation.
Relocation and Recovery Efforts
After stabilising the animals, authorities transported the lions to the Khao Son Wildlife Breeding Station in Ratchaburi, while the three bears were sent to the Bang Lamung Wildlife Breeding Station in Chon Buri. Both facilities are equipped to provide long-term care and rehabilitation.
Officials say the rescue highlights concerns about animal welfare in conflict zones and makes clear the need for stronger oversight of exotic wildlife kept in entertainment venues such as casinos.
Context of the Border Conflict
The discovery came amid renewed tensions between Thailand and Cambodia along their shared boundary, which have seen intermittent clashes and military operations in recent weeks. Despite diplomatic efforts toward a ceasefire, both sides have traded accusations and engaged in periodic hostilities, leading to civilian and military casualties.
Amid this broader security situation, the rescue has drawn attention for its humanitarian focus, as Thai forces worked quickly to save animals suffering in poor conditions at the dilapidated casino site.
